I’m Ready for my Close Up, Mr. Vampire

Good Morning, Dark Dreamers,

Recently, I have had the exciting opportunity to be interviewed, not just by wonderful bloggers online, but in front of the scary, scary camera. It even went out over TV and people let me know they saw me. Frederick Community College, the same location who hosted the amazing launch for my debut new adult novel, OF SCIONS AND MEN, also asked me to come in for a face-to-face interview not only on being an author but also on my writing process. This was a fun time, even if being scene on film is a daunting task for me, and one not often given to urban fantasy fiction writers. We spoke about many aspects of writing. Problems doing research created between TSA and myself. Vampires, shifters and mediums and how to create their consistent magic in my world. The birds and the bees: where crazy, dark ideas come from. Oh, and I even dropped a big hint of some stuff to look forward to in book 2, THE SCIONS OF WRATH.

Here are a few links to the interview.

This one is the short version that only focuses on the writing process:

But, if you want all those juicy details I mentioned above, here’s the link to the full interview:

Those are not the only fun videos I have for you, Dreamers. There is also a video of me reading part of the first chapter from OF SCIONS AND MEN at the book launch.

In honor of interviews, question and answer sessions, and getting to know each other better, Dark Dreamers, I leave you with a challenge today. There are many times I wish I could go see an author in person, but never get the chance to. I read and want to ask questions. The magic of the internet makes this so much easier now. Ask me one question that you want to know the answer to in the comments section, and I will answer you honestly. It can be about me, or the books (without major spoilers), teaching or writing. Fun, funny, serious, witty, any of the above. What do you want to know?

About Courtney Sloan

A New Orleans native, Courtney Sloan relocated to the hills of Central Maryland after Hurricane Katrina. There she lives with her husband and fellow author, J.P. Sloan, their son and their crazy German Shepherd pup. Adding to her writing life, Courtney is also a professor at the local college and enjoys learning a world of new ideas from her students as she teaches them about writing and communicating. Courtney’s New Orleans upbringing has left her with a love for the macabre and a flare for the next to normal. She writes speculative fiction with a variety of horror and sass mixed in for flavor. She loves taking the world of politics that haunts us now, and adding the supernatural to create a gumbo of thrills to keep you up at night. A self-proclaimed lover of way too many fandoms, Courtney also loves crafting. From blankets to jams to stories, it’s always better homemade. View all posts by Courtney Sloan

I know your signature color is red and I know you’ve worked it into your books and branding. Tell me one way you worked in the color red to your story…and blood doesn’t count 😉

    • Courtney Sloan

Interesting question. Yes, blood is a big factor, but red is so much more important than just blood. In OF SCIONS AND MEN, scene where people are accepting vampire rule and the status quo, red is being served or shown, whether it is red sauces in pasta, red wine or a red dress. When people are questioning the status quo or actively seeking to overturn it, white steps in: white wine, white cream sauces, or white suits. So the play back and forth of red to white is a symbolism for the shifting political structure.

“Of Scions” didn’t delve too deeply (holy crap, alliteration!) into the romantic or sexual side of Rowan’s life. Are your plans to keep it that way, or will we see some romantic heat cranking up in further books?

    • Courtney Sloan

Oh Rowan and love/sex. In OF SCIONS AND MEN she wasn’t in the right place for romance. She had to concentrate on survival for herself and her brother. But, in book 2, THE SCIONS OF WRATH, let the heat crank to 11. I promise, there will be romance and a much hotter sexual side to Rowan.
